Rob Thompson

05 July 2023

Having just returned from a prolonged session on the Somme, it is with deep sadness that we have heard of the death of friend and associate Rob Thompson.

Rob was a staunch friend of Bob and of the Butte project since day one. He lost his fight for life after a long illness in March this year.

Bob first met Rob at University in Birmingham where he lectured on the MA course in First World War studies. His lectures were absolutely first class and each presentation was truly enjoyable. Rob was a renowned WW1 speaker on the circuit and had a brilliant ability to turn up literally one second before he was the star of the show. An avid Man U supporter, Bob, and Rob would debate long into the night what went wrong after Sir Alex left. We do not think anybody ever got the answer to that one. His help, input, and advice to Bob on several WW1 topics were invaluable.

We will truly miss Rob. He really was a one-of-a-kind.
